3D Asset Development

Fanart by WilliamTheThird & Ahmed Ziab

Project Overview:
This project involved the complete creation of a highly detailed 3D model of a traditional Polynesian boat, inspired by the iconic design from Moana. My role in this project spanned from UV optimization to the creation of procedural materials and animation elements, while the base model was skillfully crafted by Senior 3D Artist Ahmed Ziab. This asset was designed to serve as a hero piece for cinematic or gaming environments, highlighting the craftsmanship, detailed textures, and procedural realism required for high-quality visual storytelling.

Project Breakdown:

  • Modeling:
The initial boat model was developed by Ahmed Ziab, focusing on an authentic Polynesian design with intricate wooden elements, ropes, and a signature sail. Ahmed’s work on this model ensured accurate topology and well-structured geometry, essential for adding complex textures and animations later in the process.

  • UV Optimization:
I performed extensive UV mapping and optimization to ensure the model could support high-resolution textures without any distortion. The UV layout was carefully checked for consistency, allowing textures to be applied seamlessly and maintaining high fidelity in all close-up shots. A UV grid was used to ensure the mapping was accurate, avoiding any stretching or inconsistencies across the model.

  • Procedural Materials in Substance Designer:
All materials on the boat were created procedurally in Substance Designer, allowing for a high level of customization and adaptability. These materials include:

    • Wood: Aged wood textures for the boat’s frame, adding realistic grain, wear, and subtle color variations.

    • Rope: Detailed rope textures with fiber patterns to enhance realism, designed to respond well to various lighting conditions.

    • Sail: The sail features a stylized spiral symbol, rendered with a cloth texture that adds depth and fabric weave details. The material allows for subtle wear and color control, blending smoothly with the natural look of the boat.

These procedural materials were crafted to ensure that the asset could be adapted to different lighting and rendering scenarios while maintaining a consistent and realistic appearance.

  • Dynamic Movement:
To bring the asset to life, I added procedural animations to the sail and the water around the boat. The sail movement was carefully crafted to mimic the natural motion of wind, adding a sense of realism and dynamism. The water material was also created procedurally, with animated ripples and waves that reflect the serene yet slightly turbulent nature of the open sea.

  • Lighting and Rendering:
The final beauty render is set in a tranquil ocean scene, under a clear sky with soft clouds, showcasing the boat in an open sea environment. Lighting was adjusted to emphasize the textures and procedural details, while the reflective water surface adds depth and contrast. The final render highlights the procedural textures and movement, offering a polished, cinematic-quality image suitable for high-end visual production.

Key Features:

  • High-Quality Procedural Textures: The wood, rope, and sail materials were entirely created procedurally, allowing for flexibility and scalability in various scenes and resolutions.

  • Dynamic Procedural Animation: Realistic movement of the sail and water for added immersion, making the model suitable for animations and cinematic scenes.

  • Optimized UV Mapping: Efficient UV layout that ensures texture consistency, enabling high-resolution close-ups without distortion.

  • Versatile Asset: Designed with adaptability in mind, this model can be used in both real-time engines like Unreal Engine and offline renders for films or animations.

Technical Details:

  • Software: Cinema 4D, Redshift Render, and Substance Designer

  • Texture Resolution: Ranging from 32bit to 16K, all procedural for flexibility in resolution requirements.

  • Procedural Movement: Animated sail and water created with Cinema 4D dynamics and custom materials.

  • Compatibility: Optimized for real-time rendering in Unreal Engine, Unity, and offline rendering in Cinema 4D with Redshift.

Reflection: This project was a fantastic exploration of traditional design and modern procedural techniques. Working closely with Ahmed Ziab, who handled the intricate modeling, allowed me to focus on elevating the model with procedural materials and animations, creating an asset that brings both authenticity and life to the scene. This project exemplifies the collaborative potential between modelers and texture artists to produce assets that are not only visually appealing but also technically robust for a variety of applications in the entertainment industry.
